The Mobile Hen House

The Ideal Hen House is a Mobile Hen House

Here, our mobile hen house is being transported.

The explanation is very simple: You can move it! You can be sure, that in the end there will be some green left of a fenced-in chicken run, especially in winter.

As an alternative you could use a particularly large piece of land for your chicken run, on which the chickens could run around freely. Otherwise the best solution is to use the principle of alternating pasture with a mobile chicken coop.

The principle of alternating pasture is simple and old. The available green area is divided into two or three sections and left to the chickens in alternation. This also works in principle with a non-mobile chicken house by changing the exercise area with a fence. However, a movable hen house makes the changing process more relaxed.

The Proper Time Period for Alternating Pasture

Depending on the size and the condition of the surfaces, as well as the season, the run out areas are changed approximately every 2-4 weeks. It is recommended not to let the areas graze too much, as otherwise they will have a harder time recovering. So, it is better to change more often or find another area, e.g. at the neighbour’s house.

“Chickens use the area made available to them intensively. If you keep chickens on the same area for a long time, they will pick away all the greenery, leaving a barren area. That’s why the shifting economy or an alternating cultivation of areas by chickens is a meaningful concept and the logically resulting implementation is the mobile hen house.”

Advantages of Mobile Chicken Farming

  • Regular changes hardly disturb the turf. Plant growth can recover quickly.
  • High-quality green feed is always available to the chickens.
  • Parasite pressure is minimized.
  • The permanent vegetation of the chicken run binds the nutrients in the plants and does not wash them into the groundwater, as in a bare pasture.
  • The chickens can experience the fresh air all year round, which leads to a strengthening of the immune system.
  • The problem of overuse near the barn is minimized. Even in the direct vicinity of the barn, it usually remains green.

What Problems Can There be With Mobile Chicken Husbandry?

There can be no really serious problems with mobile posture. A steep terrain, however, is certainly a disadvantage if the mobile hen house is equipped solely with wheels. Either wedges have to be attached to the tires or, similar to our version of a mobile hen house, there is a device that lowers the tires when needed.
The larger and more extensive the chicken run, the easier it is for predators to get closer to the chickens.

Which Types of Mobile Hen Houses are There?

One of the many creative solutions for building a henhouse.

Probably the simplest type of a mobile hen house is the construction wagon. The size is important, so that all chickens have enough space. Also the trolley should be lockable safely and should have windows. Daylight is essential for the survival of chickens.

As a conclusion of the search, at least on the Internet, building an old construction wagon yourself or organizing it is probably the cheapest alternative so far.
